3D maps demo on Xperia X10 smartphone [Video]
19 January 2010, 11:02 pm

There has been much noise over Sony Ericsson’s upcoming X10, purportedly launching 2nd quarter – let’s add 3D mapping to the X10’s list of features to clamor over.  The folks over at Ericsson Labs have revealed a video demonstration of their new 3D Landscape API running on the Xperia X10 handset.

From what little can be seen, it’s quite impressive – a reasonably fluid touchscreen navigation through a three dimensional world based on real-world imagery powered by the C3 Technologies (a spinout from defense industry company Saab AB).  The Snapdragon chip’s showing itself off fantastically well here, as no matter how much panning, tilting, and swooping through the cityscape, video output stays consistently above 30 frames per second.

There’s no confirmation or indication that this’ll be available on retail X10s straight out of the box, but the fact that the X10 is capable of this speaks a whole lot.  Check out the video below.  It’s pretty awesome.
