Thanks for the great tip.  It's a good point to bring up too that the email you compose while sync is off won't be sent out until you sync manually.  I had some mail stuck on the phone until I figured this out.

ok so I recently purchased a droid and am finding my way around fairly well. BUT I still need my hand held here and there. SO I have some newbie questions here.

-Gmail push: How do I turn it off and by doing so what will this affect other than a gain in my battery life? will it just not notify me when I have an email for my Gmail account?

-background Data: if I turn this off what will this affect? I have beautiful widgets that updates as of now every 30 minutes. If the background data is turned off will these kind off apps be affected? second how do I turn off my background data?

-Why will I have to turn my background data back on in order to use the market?

Any other quick tip info regarding this would be helpful. like I said, I understand these may be newbie kind of questions so your help is appreciated in advance.

Hello mygixxer and welcome to droidboards!  I did a video tip on how to turn off background data and GMail push you can find it here http://droidboards.com/index.php/topic,1061.0.html.

Turing off background data will affect GMail push and some other apps. It will also force you to sync your email manually when you want to send and email is sync is not enabled.  To be honest I can't quite figure out which apps it affects some seem to work without background data enabled and some don't.  I will look into that and post back what I find.

I think you have to turn background data on to use the market because it checks for updates.  So if background data is disabled  the market will not automatically check for updates.  What i usually do is go and enable background data and mail sync for about 15 minutes at different times in the day and it will sync and perform background data tasks during that 15 minutes then you can turn them both off to save battery.

fantastic! thank you sir. I have played around with this option and even though I have yet to see just how much battery life I am saving since I did it 3 hours ago, I have seen that none of my apps have seemed to be affected and my beautiful widgets still runs properly on my home screen with the weather updates and such.

great tip!
