I know many folks out there love these features and won't give it up for good battery life but I can tell you that if you turn background sync off and disable GMail push you battery life will skyrocket.  During the course of a "normal" day I use about 70% of the battery life with push and sync enabled.  When it's off I use about 10 - 15% in that same time period.  For me it's well worth it.  Just thought I'd give my .02 on this seemingly hot topic.

I have noticed the very same thing.  I can give up push and sync to get great battery life.  I don't really need to see my email the instant it arrives nor do I need to see Facebook info right away.  I know many need to see email right away so this isn't an option but if you don't you might consider making the change to get better battery life.

I think I can give up email push and background sync for better battery life.  I am going to give this a shot. Thanks for the tip!

I kind of like my email to be pushed.  I will have to try it both ways to see if the difference is huge with push disabled, if it is I may just have to check my email manually.  Thanks for the tip.

I am on day 2 of a single charge with the push and sync turned off.  I'm OK with giving up push and sync to get 2 days from a charge.  I even watched football on the phone 8)

Wow what a tip.  It seems pretty simple right.  Push and sync will kill your battery but you don't really know how much until you actually try it.  Awesome!

After a week or two with push turned off I have come to the conclusion that I would rather have great battery life than have email pushed to me.  I can't believe the difference.  The only annoyance is that with background data turned off I have to turn it back on when I go to the market but again I can make that sacrifice for great battery life.

I will have to give this a shot.  I'm not sure I can give up my mail push but I will have to see.  If I can get great battery life I may have to consider it.  Thanks for the tip.

Great tip!  Like Droid Man said turning the Background Data on when you have to use the Market is a bit inconvenient but a small price to pay for battery life.

If you disable background data and sync you will have to manually sync your calendars and contacts but again it may be worth better battery life.  Look for a video tip soon on how to manually sync calendar and contacts.

if you enable the power widget, you can tell the phone to sync everything at the time you press it, its pretty handy with keeping everything synced

Turning off auto-sync will not turn off background data but turning of background data will turn off auto-sync even though the Auto-sync box is checked it can't really do anything without background Data being enabled.  I can only say that I keep both settings off on my phone and I can get a couple of days out of a charge.  I do have to enable background data when I use the market but it only takes a second to check that box.  I don't really use any widgets that need background data and if you do you might not want to turn that off.  It all comes down to personal preferences or your needs.  I don't really need background widgets or email push but I know many love those features.

Rock on!  I will give up some of the features of this great phone to have better battery life.  If you combine this tip with the Power Control Widget tip you can sync all of your email with one touch so the push isn't as big a loss.
